Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery - EKC Building Block

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery is the specialization of orthopedics that cares for children's issues. Caring for kids is very different from the care of adults. Pediatric orthopedic surgeons face specific issues in the treatment of children. The anatomy of children is distinctly different from that of adults. Surgeons have to be mindful of children’s growth plates and the growth process, in general, when they consider surgical intervention. As such the intervention techniques, tools and considerations are quite different and, oftentimes, much more complex in children’s surgery. Fortunately, current practices in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery are quite good.

However, only a handful of surgeons specialize in pediatric orthopedic surgery due to the limited amount of surgical volumes that exist. As such, Pediatric Orthopedic surgery is relegated to a select few doctors in large urban facilities. These facilities typically have limited resources and cannot afford to invest in the newer technologies and tools that may benefit the skill of the pediatric orthopedic surgeon and their patients. EKC endeavors to provide these facilities with the equipment and resources they need to better treat their patients.

While the resources to modernize pediatric surgical practices in westernized countries may be lacking, they are completely non-existent in many of the South American and East Asian Countries. Teams of surgeons and surgical staff members make annual trips to these countries bringing humanitarian aid, training and resources from the US. The ability of these surgical teams are limited to the resources they can bring. Unfortunately, most of the resources these teams are supplied with are donated supplies intended for adult orthopedic surgery; forcing them to improvise in the event they are presented with a pediatric surgical opportunity.

EKC endeavors to work with industry to warehouse and distribute donated medical supplies and equipment, specific to pediatric orthopedics, to these surgical teams. Moreover, EKC works with foreign ministries of health and in-country medical teams to identify complex pediatric surgical patients. EKC then works to aggregate the supplies required to treat these children and provide them to the surgical teams for their mission.

In addition, EKC sends durable medical equipment and supplies, such as prosthetic limbs, braces and shoes to these children.

Pediatric Cancer Support

Perhaps the greatest tragedy bestowed upon a family is the harsh consequence of having a child plagued with Cancer. Helping children with cancer and their families cope with their reality is, perhaps, the most humbling service we can provide. While treatment interventions and techniques are improving, both Science and Medicine are still faced with uncertainties in navigating the course for a cure.

Every Kid Counts – The Lion and The Legend is committed to providing hardship assistance to these families. Through our Terms of Giving EKC will empower these children’s fight to survive and embolden their family’s courage throughout their fight.

P.A.C.E – A Positive Attitude Changes Everything is the most important theme we can impart to these children and their families throughout their ordeal.
